For most clients, the core of treatment at York Addiction & Mental Health consists of counselling, group sessions, day-to-day structured living, and therapy. This combination of treatment works together to provide a healing environment and journey to recovery.
Beyond this, our clinical team also draws on specific therapeutic modalities that may be beneficial to clients. Not every client needs to get therapy with a specific modality, but some see enormous benefits. Some clients benefit from motivational interviewing, while others may have better results from cognitive behavioural therapy.
When it comes to the specific type of therapeutic modality used, our clinical team works to match what a given client may need or determine if it is necessary at all.
Psychoeducational Addiction Groups
As a part of treatment, clients participate in 25 psychoeducational groups each week that are led by certified addictions counsellors. These group sessions facilitate fundamental learning and self-growth for issues related to clients' personal lives and addictions themselves.
Psychoeducation is a key piece of the recovery process for our clients. It gives counsellors the opportunity to challenge any negative beliefs, thinking patterns, or feelings that a client may be harbouring. Our counsellors work to provide support that opens the minds and beliefs of our clients, giving them the support to see a world in which addiction is not in control.
Individual Addiction Counselling
During treatment, clients have access to our group of certified counsellors but are also assigned as a primary counsellor upon intake. A client and their primary counsellor will work in one-on-one spaces where more specific details of a client are uncovered to best support them.
Counsellors work to keep clients accountable, help them build their skills, and provide the tools to be able to transition to a life outside of treatment. A primary counsellor's relationship with a client is vital for their treatment. As the relationship grows, the counsellor gains valuable knowledge about the client, their history, and their needs. The last piece prior to discharge is the development of the relapse prevention plan. Where our counsellors work with clients to build the most optimal plan to ensure sobriety lasts long after treatment.

Clinical Methods at York Addiction & Mental Health
Research-Based Treatments
Inside those group and individual sessions, our addiction counsellors draw on their training to use specific and proven treatment approaches. In our therapy sessions, the level of personal care goes even deeper. Our psychotherapists are trained in a variety of therapeutic modalities, allowing York Addiction & Mental Health to provide treatment to all populations. Using these modalities, our psychotherapists can deliver the exact care a specific client needs given their history, situation, and current goals. Therapeutic modalities offered at York Addiction & Mental Health are listed below.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy is one of the most common and popular modalities offered. This is because CBT shows exceptional success, particularly as a supporting role in addiction. Psychotherapists work with clients to identify specific moments, urges, or thoughts that can serve as triggers for addiction. Then, working up to identify how to stay away from using substances, and choosing sobriety instead. The main objective is to help clients understand their choices, the consequences of their choices, and how to avoid relapsing.
Cognitive Processing Therapy
Cognitive processing therapy is a type of CBT that is focused solely on the trauma and issues that surround a specific traumatic event in one's life. Clients will work to address and examine the specific beliefs or thoughts that formed around or near a traumatic event that has stuck with them. Such as thinking that they are not safe, believing that they are at fault for things which they may not be, or that people can’t be trusted. Once this trauma is unpacked, psychotherapists help clients realize that another way of processing the trauma is possible, and these false beliefs are not conducive to a life of positivity.
Dialectical Behavioural Therapy
Dialectical behavioural therapy is another therapeutic modality offered within our programs. DBT has proven effectiveness in supporting individuals who are struggling with emotional regulation, mindfulness, and acceptance, all key components of the addiction cycle. Our psychotherapists put DBT to use when deemed necessary for specific clients. Successful therapy using DBT will lead to drastically improved self-regulation, improved relationships, new boundaries, and the reduction of addictive behaviours.
Trauma Resiliency Model
Trauma resiliency model helps clients understand the physical signs and manifestations of major traumas in the mind and body. Not everyone is ready to open or discuss the reasons for their addiction, especially if that involves deeply traumatic events. Trauma resiliency teaches individuals how to understand what they’re feeling in a physical manner and understand why their nervous system is overworking. Psychotherapists work to help individuals regulate their nervous systems, cope with trauma, and begin living a life that isn’t consumed by stress or worry.
Motivational Interviewing
Motivational interviewing is a modality that is used significantly by both counsellors and psychotherapists alike at York Addiction & Mental Health. Motivational Interviewing focuses on resolving ambivalence and helping clients find their own internation reasons for positive behavioural changes. Counsellors and psychotherapists challenge the thoughts and feelings of clients and break down the barriers they have about themselves. Enabling them to see the good they can do, how they can do it, and allowing them to find their own courage to change. The goal of motivational interviewing is to help clients find their own personal reasons to break free from addiction and choose a life of positivity and sobriety.
Rational-Emotive Behavioural Therapy
REBT is a modality used to help clients identify and attempt to conquer thoughts, feelings, and actions of self-sabotage. It’s a process in which psychotherapists work with clients to challenge and replace the constant irrational and unproductive feelings that may be a key reason for addiction. In this process, negativity is to be replaced with intentional thoughts of self-compassion and self-love. The goal of REBT is to help clients shift their own self-destructive behaviours and thoughts into ones that can be positive and can support the recovery journey to lasting sobriety.
