Concurrent Disorders Treatment Services

Depression and Addiction Treatment

York Addiction & Mental Health is one of Canada's most innovative recovery homes, offering individualized, holistic treatment plans built by a team of healthcare professionals and addiction specialists with real expertise in concurrent disorder care.

Depression is one of the most common conditions we treat alongside addiction, and the two tend to reinforce each other in ways that make treating either one in isolation far less effective.

How Depression and Addiction Are Connected

The Government of Canada defines clinical depression as a period lasting two months or more that negatively affects a person's emotions, thoughts, and behaviour, often reaching a point where it interferes with everyday life. People struggling with depression often turn to alcohol or drugs as a way to self-medicate or escape, but this tends to worsen depressive symptoms over time and creates a real risk of developing a co-occurring substance use disorder.

In Canada, people with a mental illness such as depression are twice as likely to have a substance use problem as the general population, and at least 20% already do, yet only about half of Canadians experiencing a major depressive episode receive adequate care. Depression and addiction also share overlapping risk factors, including genetic vulnerabilities and early exposure to stress or trauma, which is part of why treating one without the other so often falls short.

Symptoms of Depression

Clinical depression is generally diagnosed when five or more of the following symptoms are present most days for at least two weeks, including either a depressed mood or a loss of interest or pleasure:

Why Treating Depression Alongside Addiction Matters

Alcohol and drug use are unhealthy coping mechanisms that actively work against successful depression treatment, since alcohol's depressant properties tend to intensify sadness, lethargy, and hopelessness once the initial numbing effect wears off. Without treating both conditions together, clients can end up stuck in a cycle where depression drives substance use and substance use deepens the depression.

At York Addiction & Mental Health, we build a personalized treatment plan for every client and believe firmly in getting to the root cause of the addiction rather than treating detox as a standalone solution.

Our Concurrent Treatment Programs for Depression and Addiction

Our co-occurring treatment plan for depression and addiction includes:

Medical Detox

Quitting cold turkey or detoxing at home isn't always safe, since withdrawal can bring on intense physical and emotional symptoms. Our medically guided detox helps the body flush out substances while managing withdrawal as comfortably as possible.

Drug Addiction Treatment

We offer residential treatment, in-house or hospitalization care, outpatient programs, and behavioural counselling for dependence on substances including cocaine, heroin, marijuana, DMT, opiates, ecstasy, prescription medications, GHB, and methamphetamine.

Alcohol Addiction Treatment

For clients with co-occurring depression and an alcohol use disorder, we provide detoxification and psychosocial support, individual and group counselling for maintaining abstinence, help staging interventions, and family support through our Lifelong Family Program.

Mental Health Treatment

Our mental health treatment identifies the risk factors and triggers behind a client's depression and addiction, using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, individual counselling, group counselling, and ongoing continued care.
