Family Care & Support at York Addiction & Mental Health

Addiction can be a breaking point that affects not just the person suffering, but everyone who loves them. It reaches into every relationship around them, and the people who love someone struggling with addiction are often carrying their own exhaustion, fear, and grief with nowhere to put it. York Addiction & Mental Health Family Care program exists for that reason specifically. We provide support built to help the families and loved ones who have been affected by their loved ones' addiction. York brings a chance to learn about your loved one's treatment, but more notably, how to navigate the struggles of dealing with someone's suffering. We know how hard it can be, and are here to be a support.

York Addiction & Mental Health is located in Aurora, about an hour from Toronto, though Family Care itself doesn't require travel at all.

Family Care with a Purpose

Family Care is delivered entirely virtually, by video call, led by a registered psychotherapist alongside other families going through similar experiences. You don't need to travel to Aurora or anywhere else to take part. It's built to be accessible from wherever you are, on a regular schedule, so it can fit into a life that's already stretched thin.

The Two Ways York Addiction & Mental Health Supports Your Family

Weekly Virtual Family Support Sessions

An ongoing video call group, facilitated by a registered psychotherapist, where family members and loved ones connect with others who understand exactly what this is like without needing it explained. Sessions combine education, open discussion, and the kind of connection that only comes from being in a room, even a virtual one, with people who aren't going to look at you strangely when you describe what the last year has been like.

Family Integration Sessions (As Part of Your Loved One’s Treatment Plan)

Separate from the ongoing group, families also have the option to join sessions directly involving their loved one and their primary therapist during treatment. These sessions focus specifically on communication, rebuilding trust, and making sure everyone, not just the client, feels prepared for what comes after discharge. It's a chance to be part of the actual treatment process, not just informed about it after the fact.

What You’ll Learn from Our Family Support Systems

Family Care isn’t just a space to vent, though there’s real room for that too. Sessions work through specific, practical territory:

Why You Need to Take Care of Yourself & Family During a Loved One’s Addiction

One of the hardest lessons for family members is understanding what's yours to control and what isn't. You cannot make someone else's recovery happen to them. What you can do is take real responsibility for your own health and stability, which, counterintuitively, tends to help your loved one more than exhausting yourself trying to manage their addiction directly ever does. If you're waiting until things are stable at home before getting support for yourself, that's usually backwards. Support for you is often what helps things become stable in the first place.

We Provide Support Beyond Treatment to Help Build Lasting Sobriety

Family Care isn't limited to the weeks your loved one is in active treatment. Recovery is a long process, often measured in years, not a milestone that gets reached and closed out, and families need support across that whole timeline, not just the beginning. The weekly group is built to be there for as long as it's useful to you, well past discharge.

Who Can Join our Family Support Sessions?

Parents, spouses, partners, children, siblings, and close friends of someone in treatment or recovery are all welcome. Given the nature of the material discussed, participants must be 18 years of age or older.
