York Addiction & Mental Health is one of Canada's most innovative recovery homes, offering individualized, holistic treatment plans built by a team of healthcare professionals and addiction specialists with real experience treating co-occurring conditions.
Borderline personality disorder, or BPD, is one of the more complex conditions we see alongside addiction, and treating the two together gives clients a far stronger chance at lasting recovery than treating either alone.
How Borderline Personality Disorder and Addiction Are Connected
BPD is a mental health condition marked by a distorted sense of self, unstable relationships, and intense emotional swings, often rooted in genetics, brain differences, a stressful childhood, or past trauma. Drug and alcohol use is frequently sought out for temporary relief from the painful, distressing emotions BPD brings, but using ultimately makes those symptoms worse, heightening already uncontrollable emotions and fueling more self-destructive patterns. Research suggests BPD affects roughly 2.7% of adults, and about 78% of adults with BPD go on to develop a substance-related disorder at some point in their lives. BPD is also frequently diagnosed alongside other concurrent conditions, including clinical depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, ADHD, and PTSD.
Symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder
According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, BPD symptoms generally fall into five categories:
- Unstable behaviour, including impulsive or self-destructive actions that put a person or others at risk
- Unstable emotions, with sudden shifts between rage, shame, guilt, and intense anxiety or depression that can last for hours or days after a triggering event
- Unstable relationships, marked by intense fear of abandonment and sudden shifts from strong attachment to feeling betrayed
- Unstable sense of identity, where a person's view of themselves can swing between feeling fine and feeling worthless, sometimes leading to sudden changes in jobs, relationships, or beliefs
- Awareness problems, including dissociation or feeling detached from reality, especially after a triggering event
People with BPD are also more emotionally vulnerable and clinically less stable than those without a co-occurring substance use disorder, tend to have shorter periods of abstinence and more frequent relapses, and face a real risk of self-harm, which is why BPD and addiction need to be treated together, and treated seriously, from the very start.
Why Treating BPD Alongside Addiction Matters
The National Institute on Drug Abuse recommends Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, or DBT, specifically for BPD, since it's designed to reduce both self-harm behaviours and substance use directly. At York Addiction & Mental Health, we don't believe there's a standalone approach to treating BPD and addiction as separate problems. Instead of relying on detox alone, we focus on getting to the root cause of the addiction, using evidence-based, holistic methods built around each client's specific circumstances.
Our Concurrent Treatment Programs for BPD and Addiction
Our dual diagnosis treatment plan for BPD and addiction includes:
Medical Detox
Years of using drugs or alcohol to self-medicate can make quitting alone unsafe. Our medically guided detox helps the body flush out substances while managing withdrawal symptoms as comfortably as possible.
Drug Addiction Treatment
We offer residential treatment, in-house or hospitalization care, outpatient programs, and behavioural counselling for dependence on substances including cocaine, heroin, marijuana, DMT, opiates, ecstasy, prescription medications, GHB, and methamphetamine.
Alcohol Addiction Treatment
People with BPD face a significant risk of developing an alcohol use disorder, and our alcohol addiction treatment includes detoxification, psychosocial support, help staging interventions, and family support through our Lifelong Family Program.
Mental Health Treatment
Our mental health treatment identifies the risk factors and triggers behind a client's BPD and addiction, using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, individual counselling, group counselling, and ongoing continued care.
