Methamphetamine Addiction Treatment in Ontario

How We Help

Meth addiction is one of the most negatively impactful, fast-acting, and life-changing substances someone can use or be addicted to.

York Addiction & Mental Health provides private, medically supported treatment for methamphetamine addiction at our residential facility in Aurora, just north of Toronto.

What Exactly is Methamphetamine (Meth)?

Methamphetamine is a synthetic stimulant in the amphetamine family, produced illicitly rather than manufactured to any consistent standard, which means purity and strength vary considerably from one batch to the next. It’s used as a crystalline form, sometimes called ice, or as a powder, and it can be smoked, snorted, injected, or swallowed. Compared to a drug like cocaine, meth’s high lasts dramatically longer, often many hours rather than minutes, which shapes almost everything about how meth addiction develops and how it needs to be treated.

Treatment at York Addiction & Mental Health Provides:

The Cycle of Using Meth

Meth use continues because the users are left in a loop of chasing. The initial rush fades faster than the drug itself leaves the body, users often redose repeatedly over hours or even days in what's typically called a binge, chasing a first high that doesn't fully repeat itself no matter how much is used.

Toward the end of a binge, many users enter a phase sometimes called tweaking, which can last anywhere from a few days up to two weeks. This stage is marked by insomnia, agitation, and a growing sense of paranoia, driven partly by exhaustion and partly by the drug no longer producing the effect the person is chasing. Once the binge ends, a crash follows: deep fatigue, low mood, and intense cravings that can last several days. This cycle, binge, tweak, crash, repeat, is a big part of why meth addiction escalates the way it does, and why trying to stop without support so often fails at exactly the crash stage, when cravings are highest and the person feels worst.

Why Meth Addiction Has Major Psychological Implications

Sustained meth use carries a real risk of drug-induced psychosis, involving paranoia, disorganized thinking, and hallucinations, including a specific tactile sensation often described as bugs crawling under the skin, which can lead to compulsive skin picking and visible sores. Auditory hallucinations and aggressive or erratic behaviour can also develop with heavy or prolonged use. These symptoms can persist for some time even after use stops, which is part of why psychiatric support alongside addiction treatment matters so much here, not as an afterthought but as a core part of the plan.

The Physical Effects of Prolonged Meth Addiction

Meth use is hard on the body in ways that often become visible before someone is willing to talk about the addiction itself. Dry mouth combined with teeth grinding and neglected hygiene during long binges frequently leads to severe dental damage, sometimes called meth mouth. The cardiovascular strain is serious too: elevated heart rate and blood pressure over sustained use raise real risk of heart problems, and in acute situations, meth use can bring on dangerously high body temperature, irregular heartbeat, or seizures. Weight loss, skin sores from picking, and a generally worn-down appearance are also common as use continues.

What Can You Discuss in One-on-one Counselling?

How We Treat Meth Addiction at York Addiction & Mental Health

Every client begins with a full clinical assessment covering use history, physical health, and any co-occurring mental health concerns, since psychosis, anxiety, and depression frequently accompany meth addiction and need their own attention alongside the substance use itself. There's currently no specific medication approved to treat methamphetamine dependence directly, so our medical team focuses detox on managing the crash safely and monitoring for any lingering psychological symptoms, particularly paranoia or agitation, rather than a fixed medication protocol.

From there, treatment centres on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy alongside individual and group sessions, working through the situations, people, and emotional states that tend to trigger use. Family programming and personalized fitness round out a holistic plan aimed at rebuilding both the routine and the relationships that meth use often erodes.

Why Families and Individuals Trust York Addiction & Mental Health

We’re accredited with Exemplary Standing by Accreditation Canada, the highest rating available, which reflects a real and measurable standard of how we operate. Our facility has medical staff and counsellors available around the clock. When you’re ready, we’re ready, often the same day you call and ready to provide help.

Choosing the Right Length of Your Inpatient Program

Not everyone needs the same amount of time. Some clients are ready to transition out after 30 days. Others, particularly those with a longer drinking history or additional mental health concerns, benefit from 60 or 90 days of continued structure and support. Program length is a clinical decision made with you, not a package you pick off a price list before anyone’s met you. Our admission team will suggest starting with a minimum of 30 days, and deciding to extend once you’ve been in treatment and can discuss your needs with our clinical team.
