How We Help
GHB has a reputation as a harmless party drug, easy to underestimate because it's odourless, colourless, and often used alongside alcohol at clubs or festivals without a second thought. That reputation doesn't match reality. GHB is now classified in Canada in the same schedule as heroin and cocaine, and its withdrawal can become medically dangerous fast. If GHB use has moved from occasional to something that feels harder to stop, that's worth taking seriously now, not after things get worse.
York Addiction & Mental Health provides private, medically supervised treatment at our residential facility in Aurora, just north of Toronto.
What is GHB?
Gamma-hydroxybutyric acid, known as GHB, G, or goop, occurs naturally in the body in tiny amounts, which is part of why it’s sometimes wrongly assumed to be gentler than other drugs. Recreational GHB is taken in far larger amounts than the body ever produces on its own, usually as a clear, salty-tasting liquid that’s easy to miss in a drink. It acts on GABA, a calming neurotransmitter in the brain, producing relaxation and euphoria at lower doses and, as the dose increases, drowsiness, confusion, and eventually unconsciousness.
Treatment at York Addiction & Mental Health Provides:
- Medically supervised GHB detox
- Individual and group therapy, including CBT
- Personalized, substance-specific treatment planning
- Open 24/7, no waitlist
- Exemplary Standing with Accreditation Canada
Why GHB Use Is More Dangerous Than Everyone Thinks
The gap between a typical recreational dose of GHB and an overdose is unusually small compared to most other drugs, which makes accidental overdose far more common than most users expect, especially when GHB is combined with alcohol, since both suppress breathing and the combination compounds quickly. GHB is also sometimes used to spike drinks, since it's difficult to detect and can cause short-term memory loss and reduced inhibition, a real risk worth naming plainly rather than glossing over.
Why GHB Withdrawal Requires 24/7 Medical Supervision
GHB withdrawal is one of the more serious withdrawal syndromes in addiction medicine, not something to attempt alone or manage quietly at home. Symptoms can include severe tremors, delirium, dangerous swings in blood pressure and heart rate, and seizures, and in serious cases withdrawal has led to coma. This severity is exactly why so many people who try to stop on their own end up using again, not from lack of willpower, but because the physical experience of stopping can feel unbearable and genuinely unsafe without medical support.
Medical supervision during GHB detox isn't a precaution, it's a requirement. Our medical team monitors vital signs continuously and manages symptoms directly, so withdrawal happens as safely as it possibly can.
GHB Addiction Signals
Signs of a Potential GHB Addiction
- Memory gaps or blackouts connected to use
- Needing increasing amounts of GHB to feel the same effect
- Persistent drowsiness or poor coordination outside of active use
- Compulsive use despite awareness of the risks
- Financial strain connected to obtaining the drug
- Continuing to use despite clear negative consequences
If several of these signs sound familiar, that’s usually a sign professional treatment is worth a real conversation, not a reason to feel ashamed.
How Treatment for GHB Addiction Work at York Addiction & Mental Health
Every client begins with a full clinical assessment covering use history, any other substances involved, and overall health. Because of the risks involved in GHB withdrawal, detox is managed under close medical supervision from the start, with vital signs monitored continuously and supportive medication used where needed.
Once detox is complete, treatment moves into Cognitive Behavioural Therapy alongside individual and group sessions, working through what the GHB use was actually providing, whether that was confidence in social settings, relief from anxiety, or something else, so the underlying reason doesn't simply resurface once the drug is gone.
Why Families and Individuals Trust York Addiction & Mental Health
We’re accredited with Exemplary Standing by Accreditation Canada, the highest rating available, which reflects a real and measurable standard of how we operate. Our facility has medical staff and counsellors available around the clock. When you’re ready, we’re ready, often the same day you call and ready to provide help.
Choosing the Right Length of Your Inpatient Program
Not everyone needs the same amount of time. Some clients are ready to transition out after 30 days. Others, particularly those with a longer drinking history or additional mental health concerns, benefit from 60 or 90 days of continued structure and support. Program length is a clinical decision made with you, not a package you pick off a price list before anyone’s met you. Our admission team will suggest starting with a minimum of 30 days, and deciding to extend once you’ve been in treatment and can discuss your needs with our clinical team.
