York Addiction works with clients to help them learn about addiction itself, about themselves, and about the issues underneath their substance use, all with the goal of leading a happier, more grounded life. As part of both our group and one-on-one approaches, we offer psychoeducational programming and therapy designed to educate clients about their addiction and any related behavioural issues, using a variety of methods and the best available tools to teach and discuss specific material. In most cases, an experienced counsellor facilitates the discussion directly, rather than leaving clients to work through the material alone.

How Our Psychoeducational Approach Works
A psychoeducational session helps individuals build real self-awareness, lays out specific options for change, and lets clients grow using a newfound understanding of themselves as part of their broader journey to recovery. These sessions aren't loosely improvised. York Addiction & Mental Health's education and awareness programming follows a structured, pre-planned curriculum, and the counsellors leading it bring real experience and skill in group dynamics, interpersonal communication, and teaching, all aimed at prompting clients toward specific, concrete action rather than just discussion for its own sake.
Most of this education happens through our daily group counselling and psychoeducational groups, where the same structured approach plays out in real time alongside peers working through similar material.
