How We Help
Cocaine addiction moves fast, and sometimes it’s easy to hind until until money, relationships, or health have already taken real damage.
York Addiction & Mental Health provides private, medically supported treatment for cocaine and crack cocaine addiction at our residential facility in Aurora, just north of Toronto.
How Cocaine Addiction Effects The Mind and Body
Cocaine is a stimulant, and its high is intense but short, usually somewhere between fifteen minutes and an hour. That short window is a big part of why cocaine addiction develops so quickly: the crash that follows a high is uncomfortable enough that using again starts to feel like the only way to feel normal, and tolerance builds fast, meaning it takes more of the drug, more often, to get the same effect. Over time this becomes both a physical dependence and an emotional one, since cocaine also disrupts the brain’s reward chemistry in ways that don’t reset quickly on their own.

Cocaine and Crack: The Difference Matters Treatment
Crack is cocaine that's been processed into a smokable form, and while the effects are similar, the pattern of use tends to be more intense. A crack high hits faster and fades faster, often within twenty minutes, which pushes many users toward using more frequently just to maintain the effect. Smoking also brings its own physical toll, including a condition sometimes called crack lung, involving breathing difficulty and chest tightness from repeated inhalation of the smoke.
This distinction matters clinically. Someone coming off crack is often managing a more compressed, more frequent using pattern, and treatment accounts for that directly rather than treating every stimulant addiction identically.
Cocaine Addiction Signals
The Signs of Cocaine Addiction
- Consistent Cocaine or Crack Usage
- Financial strain or debt tied directly to drug use
- Increased anxiety, irritability, or aggression
- Noticeable weight loss or loss of appetite
- Dilated pupils, dry mouth, or trouble sleeping
- Continuing to use despite clear consequences at work, home, or in relationships
- Withdrawal symptoms such as chills, nausea, or tremors when not using
If several of these are showing up in yourself or someone you love, that’s a real signal worth acting on, not a pattern that tends to resolve on its own.
How We Treat Cocaine Addiction at York Addiction & Mental Health
Every client starts with a full clinical assessment, so treatment is built around the specific person rather than a generic template. Because cocaine withdrawal can involve serious physical and emotional lows, including intense cravings and depressive symptoms, our medical team supports this stage closely rather than leaving someone to manage it alone.
From there, treatment centres heavily on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, since CBT is one of the more effective tools available for cocaine addiction specifically. Sessions focus on identifying the exact situations, people, or emotional states that trigger a craving, and building a real, practiced alternative response instead of relying on willpower alone. This work happens in both individual and group settings, alongside a broader look at what the cocaine use was actually solving, whether that's escape, anxiety, or something else, since lasting recovery usually requires addressing that underneath the substance itself.
Why Families and Individuals Trust York Addiction & Mental Health
We’re accredited with Exemplary Standing by Accreditation Canada, the highest rating available, which reflects a real and measurable standard of how we operate. Our facility has medical staff and counsellors available around the clock. When you’re ready, we’re ready, often the same day you call and ready to provide help.
Choosing the Right Length of Your Inpatient Program
Not everyone needs the same amount of time. Some clients are ready to transition out after 30 days. Others, particularly those with a longer drinking history or additional mental health concerns, benefit from 60 or 90 days of continued structure and support. Program length is a clinical decision made with you, not a package you pick off a price list before anyone’s met you. Our admission team will suggest starting with a minimum of 30 days, and deciding to extend once you’ve been in treatment and can discuss your needs with our clinical team.
