Safe, Supportive, and 24/7 Supervised Detox
For a lot of people, the fear of withdrawal is the single biggest thing standing between them and getting help, bigger even than shame or cost. The idea of getting sick, shaking, not sleeping, and going through it without support is enough to keep someone using long after they've decided they want to stop. Medical detox exists specifically to remove that barrier.
York Addiction & Mental Health provides medically supervised detox for drugs and alcohol at our residential facility in Aurora, just north of Toronto, with a full clinical team available around the clock. Call 1-888-241-3391 any time to talk through what detox would actually look like for you.
The Most Important Part of Detox: The First 72 Hours
Withdrawal timing varies by substance and by person, and it isn't always predictable in advance, which is exactly why the first three days of admission are treated as a close-monitoring window. A nurse assesses every client on arrival, and the clinical team monitors closely during this period to catch withdrawal symptoms as they begin, rather than waiting for a crisis to develop. If you already know detox will be needed before you arrive, telling us in advance lets our medical team start planning your specific approach before you even walk in the door.
The first 72 hours are also when withdrawal symptoms tend to be the most severe and complications can occur. Withdrawal presents both major physical and mental symptoms such as extreme nausea, vomiting, anxiety, insomnia, headaches, fatigue, seizures, and more. This is why it is critical that this process is medically supervised. Medical and clinical staff supervision ensures the highest level of care, support, and recovery.
The 4 Steps of Medical Detox
What Happens During a Detox
Step 1: Medical and Clinical Assessment
Every client goes through a full intake covering substance use history, physical health, and any mental health concerns, followed by diagnostics, including blood and urine testing, so the clinical team has a complete and accurate picture before deciding on an approach. If you're unsure whether you actually need medical detox, that's a normal thing to be unsure about, and it's exactly what this assessment is for.
Step 2: Personalized Detox Plan
Detox isn't standardized at York Addiction & Mental Health. We recognize the differences that detox will have depending on your history and substance use. Your plan is built around the specific substances involved, how long and how heavily they've been used, and any co-occurring mental health needs, since the right approach for alcohol withdrawal looks like the right approach for opioid withdrawal.
Step 3: Stabilization and Medical Support
A key piece of stabilization during the rehab period is the medication someone takes. Medication can ease the difficulties of withdrawal and do so safely. Our medical doctors prescribe and manage it directly, including medication used specifically to prevent seizures in higher-risk withdrawals such as alcohol or benzodiazepines. If you have a history of seizures, telling our team during admission is important, since it directly shapes how your detox is managed.
Step 4: Continuing Your Recovery in Treatment
Detox is just the start of the recovery journey. After detoxing, we recommend transitioning into a full treatment plan inside of our residential program. Individuals who get both detox and inpatient treatment receive a full package of treatment, leaving them better suited for a life of sobriety. The transition into our residential program is handled as a continuous process. So, you're not left figuring out the next step alone once your detox has been completed. At York Addiction & Mental Health, we support the entire recovery process, well beyond detox.

If You’re Already on Methadone or Suboxone
If you’re currently using methadone or buprenorphine (Suboxone) as part of opioid use treatment, tell us before you arrive.
If you’re already working with a doctor or clinic managing this medication and plan to bring your current supply, we’ll coordinate directly with your existing provider to keep your care consistent rather than starting over.
If you’re interested in starting an opioid agonist treatment approach as part of your detox here, our clinical team can walk you through the options.
Comfort & Support Matter During a Hard Process
Withdrawal is physically and mentally uncomfortable. It can include sore muscles, restlessness, disrupted sleep, and more. While medical management manages some of it, your physical comfort and environment matter too. Our facility is built to support your recovery and healing. With on-site areas to decompress, relax, or be creative. We know that it’s difficult to get through those hard days during detox, so our facility is built to support your comfort and healing at every level.
How to Know if You Need a Medical Detox
Physical dependence on alcohol, benzodiazepines, or opioids carries real withdrawal risk and should always be managed medically, not attempted alone. Substances like cannabis, cocaine, or hallucinogens generally don't carry the same physical danger during withdrawal, but a supervised environment still matters, both for comfort and because early recovery is genuinely easier with support than without it. If you're not sure which category your situation falls into, that's a completely normal question to bring to an assessment call rather than something you need to figure out yourself first. Please reach out to our admissions team and we can discuss if detox will benefit your recovery.
Why Families and Individuals Trust York Addiction & Mental Health
We’re accredited with Exemplary Standing by Accreditation Canada, the highest rating available, which reflects a real and measurable standard of how we operate. Our facility has medical staff and counsellors available around the clock. When you’re ready, we’re ready, often the same day you call and ready to provide help.
Choosing the Right Length of Your Inpatient Program
Not everyone needs the same amount of time. Some clients are ready to transition out after 30 days. Others, particularly those with a longer drinking history or additional mental health concerns, benefit from 60 or 90 days of continued structure and support. Program length is a clinical decision made with you, not a package you pick off a price list before anyone’s met you. Our admission team will suggest starting with a minimum of 30 days, and deciding to extend once you’ve been in treatment and can discuss your needs with our clinical team.
