Safe, private and accredited prescription drug detox

Prescription Drug Detox & Withdrawal Support in Ontario

Because these medications came from a pharmacy, not a dealer, it's easy to assume the withdrawal must be gentler too. For some prescription drugs, that's roughly true. For others, particularly benzodiazepines, it genuinely isn't, and treating it like a minor inconvenience can be dangerous. What detox actually looks like depends entirely on what was prescribed.

York Addiction & Mental Health provides medically supervised detox for prescription medications at our residential facility in Aurora, just north of Toronto.

Why Prescription Drug Detox Is Different for Everyone

Prescription drug addiction usually falls into one of three categories, opioids, benzodiazepines, or stimulants, and each one has a completely different withdrawal profile. Lumping them together under one detox plan is a real mistake, and it’s part of why this page treats each one separately rather than describing a single generic process.

Opioid and Painkiller Withdrawal

Medications like oxycodone, hydrocodone, and morphine carry real physical dependence risk, with withdrawal that's intensely uncomfortable, nausea, muscle aches, chills, insomnia, though rarely as medically dangerous on its own as alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal. The more serious danger tends to come afterward: once tolerance drops during detox, returning to a previous dose carries significant overdose risk.

Benzodiazepine Withdrawal

Benzodiazepines, Xanax and Valium being the two most familiar names, work by calming an overactive nervous system, and with regular use the brain adjusts by dialing up its own excitability to compensate, similar to what happens with alcohol. Stop suddenly, and that unopposed excitability can produce serious symptoms, including seizures, and in severe cases, psychosis. This is not a withdrawal to taper through quickly or manage without medical involvement.

Stimulant Withdrawal

Prescription stimulants like Adderall and Ritalin, typically prescribed for ADHD, don't carry the same physical withdrawal danger as opioids or benzodiazepines. What follows misuse is usually a crash, deep fatigue, low mood, and intense cravings, that can last several days. It's rarely medically dangerous on its own, but it's a common point of relapse without support, since the low that follows can feel unbearable enough to reach for more.

Signs Your Prescription Drug Use Requires Medical Detox

If any of this applies, particularly if benzodiazepines are involved, please don’t attempt to stop cold on your own. That specific combination, high dose plus abrupt stop, is one of the more dangerous situations covered on this entire site.

Our Detox Plans Are Built for Each Specific Medication Used

This is exactly why our assessment doesn’t stop at “prescription drug addiction” as a category.

Knowing precisely what’s been used, at what dose, for how long, changes everything about how detox is paced and monitored, especially for benzodiazepines, where getting the timeline wrong carries real risk.

What Happens During Prescription Drug Detox at York Addiction & Mental Health

Every client begins with a full clinical assessment identifying the exact medication, dose, and history involved, followed by a personalized plan, whether that's a short, medically managed opioid detox or a much longer, carefully paced benzodiazepine taper.

Why Families and Individuals Trust York Addiction & Mental Health

We’re accredited with Exemplary Standing by Accreditation Canada, the highest rating available, which reflects a real and measurable standard of how we operate. Our facility has medical staff and counsellors available around the clock. When you’re ready, we’re ready, often the same day you call and ready to provide help.

Choosing the Right Length of Your Inpatient Program

Not everyone needs the same amount of time. Some clients are ready to transition out after 30 days. Others, particularly those with a longer drinking history or additional mental health concerns, benefit from 60 or 90 days of continued structure and support. Program length is a clinical decision made with you, not a package you pick off a price list before anyone’s met you. Our admission team will suggest starting with a minimum of 30 days, and deciding to extend once you’ve been in treatment and can discuss your needs with our clinical team.
